Welcome to another edition of, well, I haven’t quite come up with a name for this recruiting update series…but I welcome you just the same.
Hopefully our friends and fans down on the coast are prepared for the impending hurricane, and I want to take a second to wish safe travels on those fleeing from the potential disaster areas.
In the meantime, I have prepared another update on some of the developments in the recruiting world during the course of the last week. Enjoy!
Kevin McCullar, 6’5 PG, Class of 2019
I am a legitimate fan of this rising 2019 prospect out of San Antonio Wagner. I watched him play at the GASO in Round Rock and I was blown away by his ability to simply take over and dominate a game. He was playing for YIISuccess 16U, but they were playing up in the tournament and McCullar looked like the best player on the court in nearly every game I saw. And, by the look of the schools interested in him, I’m not the kid’s only fan.
McCullar has offers from Oklahoma, Kansas State, Houston, Louisiana Tech, North Texas, UTSA, Tulsa and Northern Colorado. A reminder—he’s only an incoming junior. McCullar’s dad (a former football player at my alma mater, Texas Tech) also gave me a list of all the schools who’ve reached out and recruited his son, comprising Michigan, Baylor, Stanford, Texas Tech, Texas A&M, Illinois State, Colorado, Texas State, SMU and Texas.
He’s already visited several schools unofficially, including Texas, Baylor, Houston and Oklahoma (among others) and is scheduled to visit the latter three of the aforementioned schools for a second time this fall. McCullar also will take a visit to Texas A&M for the first time soon.
Darius McBride, 6’3 SG, Class of 2019
I saw a lot of Darius McBride this summer with Urban ASAK, and he was the most consistent scorer on the team outside of Texas commit Brock Cunningham. The kid is aggressive with the ball and gets to the rim with ease, regularly converting on and-ones.
McBride has an offer from Incarnate Word, but is receiving interest from Texas A&M, San Diego and Tulsa. UTSA and Oral Roberts are heavily interested and have told McBride they intend to come out to Vista Ridge to watch him practice with his high school team.
Chris Mullins, 6’4 SF, Class of 2018
The recruitment of Chris Mullins has come to the close after the Mansfield Timberview prospect committed to Rice on Sunday. Mullins had a visit lined up with Sam Houston State later in the month and was receiving interest from other schools like Penn, UTA and Texas State, but ultimately the small forward decided to award his commitment to the Owls. Mullins said his relationship with the Rice coaching staff and their unwavering dedication in recruiting him was the deciding factor in his commitment.
