North Shore (Houston) guard Kerwin Roach is a top-10 player in the state of Texas, and I had the chance to talk with the Longhorn commit about his recruitment, his future, and his taste in music.
If you haven’t seen the kid play, here’s a video of him scoring 38 points in the 2014-2015 season opener.
Yeah, he’s got the talent. Let’s learn more about his personality:
ZD: When did you start playing basketball?
KR: I know I was very young. My dad always played. I just remember growing up watching him and it made me want to play. I can’t tell you the exact day, but I’ve always been a student of the game.
ZD: Did you play any other sports growing up?
KR: Yeah. You know Texas is a football state. Most of my life I played football. I played quarterback.
ZD: When did you realize you had the potential to be really, really good at basketball?
KR: I want to say 11th grade, when I stopped playing football and just focused on basketball.
ZD: What made you choose Texas over some of the other schools?
KR: The coaches were straight up with me, they told me what they needed and I just felt like I could step in and provide that for them, which is a guard that can score.
ZD: Who are your top-three artists to listen to?
KR: Obviously Drake, PartyNextDoor and The Weekend.
ZD: What do you think Drizzy’s new mixtape?
KR: I was jammin’ it right before you called me.
ZD: Where did you come up with your Twitter handle (SumbdyFixDaNet – give him a follow)?
KR: I was trying to create a Twitter name, and I was trying to think of basketball names like “above the rim” so I just had to choose one that fit me. So I remember this one tournament, I had my teammate with me and I hit a three-pointer and the net got stuck, and I was like “Somebody fix the next” and it just stuck with me, I thought it was creative.
ZD: What’s your favorite restaurant?
ZD: What do you get there?
KR: The honey chipotle chicken crispers.
ZD: What’s your favorite sport to watch other than basketball?
ZD: NFL or college?
KR: College. College is way more exciting than the NFL.
ZD: LeBron James or Kevin Durant?
KR: Kevin Durant.
ZD: Good answer, because some of those Texas people are going to be seeing this. That was a trap question.
KR: Laughing Oh yeah.
ZD: Steph Curry or Chris Paul?
ZD: Let’s do a little word association. I say a word, you say the first thing that comes to mind.
ZD: Texas A&M.
ZD: Come on, you got to have something better than that for them.
KR: Laughing I’d rather not say.
ZD: North Shore.
KR: State champions.
ZD: Rick Barnes.
KR: Great, awesome.
ZD: Zach LaVine.
KR: Hops, bunnies.
ZD: Big 12.
ZD: Kerwin Roach.
Drake, a cool Twitter handle, and honey chipotle chicken crispers. What more can you want in a point guard? UT fans, he’s headed your way next season, and before you know it, his teammates will be fixing the nets for him at the Frank Erwin Center.
Oh. New idea for a Twitter handle. @TheFrankKerwinCenter. Book it.
